Korean Gim Buying Guide
A five-minute guide to picking gim at a Korean market.
The gim aisle at a Korean market looks like a wall of nearly identical black-and-green packets. Most of the time the differences come down to three things: what form it's in, whether it's seasoned, and which oil they used. This page is the short version — enough to walk into H Mart, pick a pack with intent, and leave in five minutes.
What to buy first
If this is your first pack, narrow the wall down to three formats — each does one thing well, and together they cover most of how Koreans actually eat gim:
- Dosirak-gim (도시락김). Small, pre-cut, single-serve foil packs of seasoned roasted laver. Tear, eat, done. The single easiest entry point. Most kids in Korea know gim through this format first.
- Kim-jaban (김자반). Crumbled, seasoned flakes in a bottle or pouch — usually with sesame and a small amount of sugar. Sprinkle a spoonful on a bowl of rice and you have a meal. Keeps for weeks once opened, unlike sheets.
- Gimbap-gim (김밥김). Full-size unseasoned sheets, built for rolling. Skip this until you're ready to cook, then jump to the Gimbap Basics recipe.
The seasoned full sheets (kim-gui) and the deep-fried snack (kim-bugak) are great too, but they aren't the place to start. The three above will tell you whether you actually like gim before you commit to a stack of full sheets.
How to read the label
Korean labels are mostly in Hangul, but the four things that matter are easy to spot once you know what you're looking at.
- Seasoned vs. unseasoned. 조미김 is seasoned (oil + salt, ready to eat). 무조미김 or just plain 김 with no roasting language is unseasoned — the format you want for cooking. If the front of the pack is glossy and dotted with salt, it's seasoned.
- Which oil. Look at the ingredients list: 참기름 (sesame), 들기름 (perilla), or a generic 식용유 (vegetable oil). Sesame is the classic, mild and nutty. Perilla is grassier and slightly more savory — a Korean favorite. Generic vegetable oil is what you usually find in the cheapest packs and tends to taste flat. The oil is most of the flavor in seasoned gim, so this matters more than the brand.
- How salty. Salt content varies more than the packaging suggests. Two seasoned packs from the same shelf can sit a full grade apart. The Reviews page rates every gim we've opened on a 0–3 scale for both oiliness and saltiness, so you can sort for the profile you want.
- Origin. Most Korean gim comes from one of three coastal regions — Wando (완도), Sinan (신안), or Goheung (고흥). All three produce well-regarded laver; you don't need to chase a specific one. It's mostly a marker that the product is genuinely Korean rather than re-packed elsewhere.
Where to buy
In the United States, the path of least resistance is a Korean grocery chain — H Mart and Hannam Chain stock the widest range and rotate fresh inventory. Most metro areas have at least one branch, and the gim aisle is usually near the dried goods or the side-dish refrigerator.
For online, three options cover most cases: Amazon (fast, but the selection skews toward Korean-American brands like Nori or CJ rather than the kinds of gim you'd find on a Korean shelf), Weee! (closer to a real Korean-mart selection, ships chilled and frozen), and HMart.com (the in-store catalog, online). For specific Korean brands that aren't carried locally, the Korean direct-export sites — Coupang Global and Gmarket Global — work, but shipping eats into the price.
Price range
Rough US prices in 2026, useful as a sanity check:
- Dosirak-gim, 8-pack: $5–8.
- Kim-jaban, 50–80g jar or pouch: $4–7.
- Gimbap-gim, 10 full sheets: $4–6.
- Premium seasoned full sheets (kim-gui): $7–12 for a stack.
If you see a dosirak pack for under $3 or a kim-jaban for under $3, check the oil. Cheap packs almost always use generic vegetable oil and lean heavily on salt to compensate. Not necessarily bad, but worth knowing what you're trading off.
Storage
Sealed, gim keeps for the better part of a year — moisture is the enemy, not time. Once you open a pack, it goes soggy in a day or two if left out. The fix is simple: reseal tightly, push the air out, and keep it in a dry cupboard. For long-term storage, a zip bag in the freezer works fine; thaw the sheets at room temperature for a few minutes before eating.
If a sheet has lost its snap, drag it across a dry pan over low heat for three or four seconds per side. The crispness comes back almost instantly.
